Buyer's Guide

Buying a Pre-Owned Mammography System: Key Considerations

Mammography is a highly regulated, dose-sensitive modality. This guide covers the key evaluation criteria for selecting a clinically compliant pre-owned system.

1. 2D vs. 3D Tomosynthesis

Choose the technology that matches your clinical programme.

  • 2D FFDM for standard diagnostic work
  • 3D DBT: better detection, lower recall rates
  • Recommended for dense breast tissue populations

2. Digital Detector Quality

Detector condition is the highest-risk procurement variable.

  • Detector uniformity and pixel defect maps
  • DQE records and ACR phantom results
  • Replacement is the highest-cost maintenance item

3. Accreditation Documentation

Regulatory compliance and documentation from day one.

  • ACR phantom image quality records
  • Compression force calibration history
  • kV accuracy, HVL, and dose measurements

4. Compression & Accessories

Full paddle set and correct force range for all clinical uses.

  • Compression force range (100–200 N minimum)
  • Standard, spot compression & magnification paddles
  • Biopsy accessories if required

5. Brands We Supply

Leading mammography system manufacturers.

  • Hologic — Selenia Dimensions (2D/3D)
  • GE Healthcare — Senographe series
  • Siemens Healthineers — Mammomat series; Fujifilm

6. Warranty & After-Sales

Specialist ongoing support for a heavily regulated modality.

  • Standard 90-day parts warranty
  • Annual physicist QA support available
  • Detector service contracts available

Common Questions

Common Buyer Questions

Answers to the most common questions about pre-owned mammography systems.

Should I choose 2D or 3D mammography?
3D digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) provides meaningfully better cancer detection rates and significantly lower recall rates compared to 2D FFDM, particularly for women with dense breast tissue. If your programme serves a screening population or handles high-volume breast diagnostics, 3D is strongly recommended. 2D systems remain clinically appropriate for lower-volume diagnostic use.
How do I verify the digital detector is in good condition?
Request detector uniformity test results and pixel defect maps from the most recent QA test. The ACR acceptance criteria specify maximum allowable pixel defects and image uniformity. NOVO Imaging's inspection includes detector testing with ACR phantom imaging, and the results are included in the condition report.
Can ACR accreditation be transferred with a pre-owned system?
ACR accreditation is site-specific and does not transfer with the equipment. The receiving facility must re-apply for ACR accreditation after installation. However, a system that has maintained accreditation documentation has verifiable image quality performance, which supports a smooth re-accreditation process.
What compression forces are required for mammography?
Most regulatory standards specify a maximum automatic compression force of 200 N and a minimum of 100 N. Manual mode allows higher forces. NOVO Imaging verifies compression force calibration and range during inspection.
