Buyer's Guide

Buying a Pre-Owned Ultrasound System: Key Considerations

Pre-owned ultrasound systems are among the fastest-return capital purchases in diagnostic imaging. This guide covers the key factors to match a system to your clinical application.

1. Clinical Application Match

The right application match determines probe set and system capability.

  • Cardiac echo, general radiology, OB/GYN
  • MSK, vascular, small parts or point-of-care
  • Application drives probe set required

2. Probe & Transducer Inventory

Probes represent 30–50% of system replacement value.

  • Verify probe models, frequency range & element count
  • Test all elements for dead or noisy channels
  • Confirm probe compatibility with specific system model

3. Image Quality & Doppler

Core imaging performance varies significantly between generations.

  • B-mode resolution and tissue harmonics
  • Colour Doppler sensitivity and spectral waveform
  • Strain imaging and elastography if needed

4. Portability & Form Factor

Choose the form factor that fits your clinical deployment.

  • Large cart for specialist cardiology & radiology
  • Compact cart for multi-room flexibility
  • Point-of-care for ward, anaesthesia & emergency

5. Brands We Supply

Leading ultrasound platforms for all clinical applications.

  • GE Healthcare, Philips Healthcare, Siemens
  • Canon Medical (Toshiba), Mindray, Esaote
  • Full range from echo-specialist to portable POC

6. Warranty & Support

Fast deployment and long-term service coverage.

  • Standard 90-day parts warranty
  • Probe refurbishment and element repair service
  • DICOM/PACS integration on delivery

Common Questions

Common Buyer Questions

Answers to the most common questions about pre-owned ultrasound systems.

What should I check on probes when buying a pre-owned ultrasound system?
Probe condition is the most critical variable in pre-owned ultrasound. Each probe should be tested for dead or noisy elements using a phased array test tool. The outer lens and casing should be inspected for cracks, delamination, or cable strain damage. A probe with >5% dead elements will produce image artefacts and should be repaired or replaced.
Can I add probes from a different vendor to an existing ultrasound system?
No. Ultrasound probes are proprietary to specific system platforms and are not cross-compatible between vendors. Even within the same vendor family, probe connectors vary between system generations (e.g., GE LOGIQ E9 and E9 R6 use different connectors). Always confirm probe compatibility with the specific system model and software version.
What is the difference between a cardiac echo system and a general radiology ultrasound?
Cardiac echo systems (GE Vivid, Philips EPIQ Cardiac, Siemens ACUSON SC2000) are optimised for phased-array cardiac probes, high-frame-rate ECG triggering, tissue Doppler imaging, speckle tracking strain, and 3D cardiac acquisition. General radiology systems are optimised for curvilinear and linear probe applications (liver, kidney, thyroid, vascular). Some high-end general systems (GE LOGIQ E9, Philips EPIQ 7G) support both applications with appropriate probes.
Does NOVO Imaging supply portable or handheld ultrasound systems?
Yes. NOVO Imaging supplies portable cart, laptop-based, and tablet-based ultrasound systems for point-of-care and anaesthesia applications. These include systems such as the GE Venue Go, Philips Lumify, and Mindray TE7. Contact our team with your clinical application and budget.
