Buyer's Guide

Buying a Pre-Owned X-Ray Room System: Key Considerations

Fixed digital radiography room systems deliver high-throughput, high-quality general imaging. This guide covers the key factors for a successful pre-owned DR room acquisition.

1. Room Configuration

Choose the layout that fits your available space and clinical use.

  • Ceiling-suspended (OTC) for widest projection range
  • Floor-to-ceiling column: efficient, lower install cost
  • Fluoroscopy-capable systems for barium & IVU

2. Flat-Panel Detector Quality

Detector condition is the primary value risk in any pre-owned DR room.

  • Uniformity test and pixel defect map required
  • AEC calibration and performance verification
  • Wireless panels for flexible Bucky workflow

3. Generator Performance

kV accuracy and output must meet your clinical throughput needs.

  • kVp range (40–150 kVp) and mA range
  • kW output for sustained high-volume use
  • Verify accuracy with calibrated test equipment

4. Table & Wall Bucky

Patient positioning and throughput depend on the table setup.

  • Standard, floating-top or tilting table options
  • Wall Bucky range and Bucky tray format
  • Trauma-capable configuration if needed

5. Brands We Supply

Common Questions

Common Buyer Questions

Answers to the most common questions about pre-owned X-ray room systems.

What is the difference between a ceiling-suspended X-ray system and a floor-mounted column system?
Ceiling-suspended systems (overhead tube crane, OTC) support the X-ray tube on a ceiling-mounted rail system, providing the widest range of horizontal and vertical positioning and the ability to perform projections in all standard views plus some less common ones. Floor-to-ceiling column systems support the tube on a single or dual floor-to-ceiling column, limiting lateral movement but offering a faster and lower-cost installation. Both support a wall Bucky and table Bucky.
How do I assess the digital flat-panel detector condition?
Request the most recent detector QA test: flat-field uniformity image, pixel defect map, and DQE measurement if available. A detector in good clinical condition will show uniform brightness, minimal dead pixel clusters, and a DQE consistent with the manufacturer specification. Detector replacement is typically the highest-cost maintenance event on a DR system.
What shielding does a fixed X-ray room require?
Fixed X-ray rooms require radiation shielding designed by a qualified medical physicist based on the workload, system output, and adjacent occupancy. Typical requirements are 1–2 mm Pb equivalent in primary beam walls, with lighter shielding in secondary directions. A lead-lined viewing window in the control room is standard. NOVO Imaging can provide referrals to radiation safety consultants for room design review.
Can I add fluoroscopy capability to a standard DR room?
Adding fluoroscopy to an existing DR room typically requires a different system configuration — specifically a remote-controlled tilting table with integrated fluoroscopy capability (e.g., Philips DigitalDiagnost C, GE Optima XR646). This is not a software upgrade to a standard DR table. If fluoroscopy capability is needed, it should be specified at procurement. NOVO Imaging can advise on system options that support both DR and fluoroscopy.
